Vintage Collectibles - Magazines - Sports Illustrated
"Tough seas make tough Australians."
More than 50 years ago, surfing was alive and well Down Under. As this old Sports Illustrated magazine proves, wave riding is "both a serious business for the world's finest lifesavers and a rough-and-tumble sport enjoyed by millions."
A five-page color feature focuses on the Australian Surfabout, with dinghy racing, surf ski competition, paddle racing, and body surfing. This is certainly one of the earliest references to surfing in an American publication.
