Vintage Collectibles - Magazines - Surfer Magazine - 1980's
James Jones gets in early on the cleanest day of the year at Waimea during the winter of 1982/83.
Content includes a Central America travel feature titled "Centro: 95 Degrees in the Shade," featuring some quality Costa Rica and El Salvador. Back home in California, it's "Golden State: The Best Surf of the Century," with winter storms battering beachfront homes and piers, while providing shacks for surfers...Santa Cruz and San Diego counties get a lion's share. An Atlantic City, New Jersey pictorial shows that South Jersey gets its share of quality surf, too. Standouts include Steve Dwyer and Mark Neustadter.
Then it's on to "Monster Surf" in Hawaii, where Waimea produced more XXL days than it had since 1969. Players include Ken Bradshaw, James Jones, and Charlie Walker. Check out the classic two-page spread of Alec Cooke, a.k.a. "Ace Cool," taking gas on a solid 20-footer at Waimea. You gotta give him credit for going for it!
